How to Give a Presentation in Class

1. Build the right foundation that will secure the maximum amount of points in the speech. (0:54)
At the end of the day, since this is a classroom presentation, our goal is to maximize the grade that we get so there is some part of following the rules and playing by the book for the 1st draft of your presentation. So, if you’re suppose to present in 4 weeks, your goal is to meet the minimal expectations of that speech in the 1st week, so you have another 3 weeks to make it amazing.
The biggest mistake I see university students make is they don’t spend nearly as much time as they should on their presentations, they probably prepare 2-3 days before they actually present it which obviously leads to the idea of why they’re so bad to begin with. Would you ever plan a wedding 2 days before it actually happens? Well, no so start practising earlier so you can have something to work with way ahead of time so that you’re actually having fun doing it rather than being stressed about the presentation. Remove as many stressors as you possibly can to maximize the chances that you believe something worth sharing to others. This is how to give a presentation in class.
2. Brainstorm creative ways to explain the information in new innovative ways. (2:34)
Now that you have the foundation and a couple of weeks left to prepare, now comes the fun part. Based on what you know about the subject, how can you take your content and make it more compelling for others to hear and listen to?
For those who still think this isn’t possible, you shouldn’t forget that I majored in University in Accounting, not Engineering where you’re building cool stuff or even the Sciences where there’s a lot of innovation happening, but accounting, dry, a bit bland, and extremely complicated and we figured out how to make it cool anyways. How?
When we look at the policies that we had to explain to the broader class, we asked ourselves simple questions like what does this policy even matter? Well, I mean if matters because businesses need to know about this to achieve a certain goal, whether it’s to save money on their taxes or gain access to better ways of managing their money. This is how to give a presentation in class.
3. Bulletproof your presentation through questions & repetition (4:21).
The last marker to an exceptional university presentation is building up the resiliency before you actually have to give it. Before I give a really important talk, I get a bunch of people that I know, like and trust to try and find as many holes as possible in our group presentations whether it was a change in the font, to a change in the way we were speaking, to the way that we looked. Everything and I mean everything was taken care of before we actually had to give the presentation so that the teacher was just left in amazement at how well the team performed, so bulletproof your presentation so you can walk in and just be absolutely exceptional and get the A you rightfully deserve. This is how to give a presentation in class.
Remember, as John Wooden taught us, “Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.” I find there’s so much truth there, just because we have constraints, doesn’t mean we should be giving boring presentations. Everything has constraints, some greater than others, but our work is find the gems within that structure and deliver something amazing anyways, and I hope this video gave you the courage to do that as well.
