A true behind-the-scenes look. This video was produced in 1994 at the request of my plant manager. Its purpose was to provide an impression of the coking plant during inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances, even when a tour wasn't possible. Since the processes aren't always easy for laypeople to understand, the video has been re-recorded and supplemented with commentary.

Summary: The Prosper coking plant in Bottrop is the last remaining facility of Deutsche Steinkohle AG. In addition to domestic coal, coking coal from overseas is increasingly being used. The coal is delivered by rail. Long conveyor belts transport the coal from the underground bunker to the blending yard, where it is mixed using the "Chevron" method. Loading cars collect the coal from the coal piles and fill the heated coking chambers. After 24.5 hours, the coal is converted into coke, with approximately 25% evaporating into gas and tar. A press then pushes the finished coke out of the chamber. This falls into a fire truck and is cooled down with water in the fire tower. A look into the gas supply and the control center rounds off the film.

Summary

The coking plant "Prosper" in the city of Bottrop is the last one that belongs to the "Deutsche Steinkohle AG". Except German coal they use more and more coal from overseas. Usually the coal is delivered by the Railway. Long conveyors transport the coal from a deep bin towards the mixing plant. Here the coal becomes mixed by the Chevron method. From huge coal towers charging cars fetch the coal and fill it into the heated chambers. After 24.5 hours the coal completely changed into coke, whereby nearly 25% evaporate as tar and gas. A pushing machine pushes the hot coke out of the heated chamber. A quenching car drives the glowing coke into a quenching tower and water cools down the hot coke. With a last view into the gas supply and the control station this movie ends.
