Chapter 18 of The Ladder is titled "On Insensibility, That Is, On the Deadness of the Soul, and the Death of the Mind Preceding the Death of the Body."
This is what The Ladder says: "Insensibility, both physical and mental, is the deadening of feeling due to long-term illness and neglect, ending in insensibility."
