Hi, I’m Barend from Tameson, and today we're going to talk about 3/2-way pneumatic solenoid valves. We will cover their basic functionality, different types, and some common applications where they are used.
A 3/2-way pneumatic solenoid valve is a directional control valve that controls air or gas flow in pneumatic systems. It can be broken down into three main components: the valve, the solenoid, and the pneumatic system. The "3/2" designation means that the valve has three ports (inlet, outlet, and exhaust) and two positions (open and closed).
In one position, the inlet is connected to the outlet while the exhaust is blocked. In the other position, the inlet is blocked while the outlet is connected to the exhaust. The solenoid allows the valve to be controlled remotely and with a high degree of precision.
With a spring return mechanism, a 3/2-way pneumatic solenoid valve controls single-acting devices such as pneumatic cylinders, actuators, and grippers.
If you have a single-acting pneumatic cylinder, you can use a 3/2-way solenoid valve to control the flow of compressed air to control the operation of the cylinder.
They can also control single-acting pneumatic grippers. When the solenoid is energized, the valve connects the inlet port to the gripper, allowing air to flow in, causing the gripping action. When the solenoid is de-energized, the valve exhausts the air from the gripper to the exhaust port, and the internal spring returns the gripper to its open position.
A 3/2-way solenoid valve is unsuitable for double-acting devices or applications requiring independent control of both device directions. A 4/2 or 5/2-way valve would be a better choice in such cases.
Next, let's see the circuit functions of a 3/2-way pneumatic solenoid valve. As mentioned, the valve can be either open or closed. When the valve opens, air flows from the inlet (P, 1) to the outlet (A, 2) to the connected component. When the valve is closed, air flows from the outlet (A, 2) to the exhaust (R, 3).
3/2-way pneumatic solenoid valves can be monostable or bistable.
Monostable means the valve has one stable state and requires power to change to another. Mono-stable 3/2-way valves can be Normally Closed or Normally Open. A valve that is closed with no power is considered normally closed, and one that is open with no power, is called normally open.
Bistable means the valve has two stable states, can hold either without continuous power, and just uses power for a short period of time to switch between states.
Hence, the different functions of the 3/2-way pneumatic solenoid valve are:
3/2-way mono-stable normally closed
3/2-way mono-stable normally open, and,
3/2-way bi-stable
