When your ears are exposed to too loud noises for too long, your ears can become damaged and your hearing can become worse. The loudness of a sound is indicated in decibels, dB for short. A low decibel value also means low loudness. Hearing protection is meant to reduce the decibel value that your ears hear. The degree to which hearing protection reduces sound is indicated by its SNR value. SNR stands for Single Number Rating. For example, if you have hearing protection with an SNR value of 30 decibels and the ambient noise is 100 decibels, you will only hear 70 decibels through the hearing protection.
To give you an indication of how the decibel scale works I will give a few examples:
With normal breathing, you produce 10 dB of sound.
If someone is whispering 2 meters away, you hear 40dB.
If you are talking to someone at a 1-meter distance, you hear 60dB.
A freight train at 30 meters distance produces about 80 dB
A hand drill produces about 100 dB of sound.
And at an average festival, you hear 105 dB
The risk of hearing damage starts at 70dB and above. So, if the sound level is lower than 70db, you don't need hearing protection. For sounds louder than 70dB, it also depends on how long you are exposed to this sound level. This can be seen in the following table. This table also immediately shows the usefulness of hearing protection. If you are drilling with a drill that produces 100 decibels, you would normally be at risk of hearing damage after only 15 minutes. Now if you put on earmuffs with an SNR value of 30, you can feel free to drill the whole workday without risking hearing damage.
