There are three main factors you need to keep in mind when buying a blade for the hacksaw:
First, consider what type of metal the blade should be. Cheap hacksaw blades are generally made from high carbon steel. They work well, but are less heat resistant. There is a lot of heat generated when cutting with a hacksaw blade, making high-carbon steel blades wear our quicker.. The blades that last longer are made of bi-metal. In this case, the teeth are made of high-speed steel and then bonded onto the back of spring steel, which keeps the cost down, but also makes the blades last longer.
The second factor is the number of teeth per inch. Hacksaw blades are differentiated by the number of teeth per inch. The more teeth per inch, the thinner material you can cut. For heavy duty cutting jobs like the steel reinforcing rod or pipe, an 18 teeth per inch blade would be the right choice. Choose a 24 teeth per inch blade for a medium duty cutting job like a thin wall electrical conduit. 32 teeth per inch blade is the right choice for cutting light metals like aluminium.
The third factor is the length of the blade. Get a blade that suits the frame length. So, if you have a 10-inch frame, you need to get a 10-inch blade.
Now, let's take a look at changing the blades out.
To remove the blade, there are a few options depending on the manufacturer. These saws use a maganism in the handle, but a wingnut is also common. Take the blade off the hooks at the ends and remove it from the frame.
Now, to attach a new blade. First, see if the blade has an arrow on it indicating the direction of cutting, however, sometimes it won’t have one. If no arrow is present on the blade, you can take a look at the blade’s teeth- which way they are pointing, and that’s the way you are going to cut. You can install the blade either way, it will fit. But you’ll get a better cutting experience with less effort if you cut pushing the blade outwards. Therefore, make sure the arrow, and teeth, point away from the handle. Take the new blade, put it onto the hooks at the ends. Then tighten the blade by your specific mechanism.
Now you have the correct hacksaw frame, blade, and are ready to cut!
