Sitting pretty on the foothills of towering peaks in the state's Garhwal region, Madhyamaheshwar (also known as Madhmaheshwar) is a revered religious site. One of the Panch Kedars (holy temples dedicated to Lord Shiva), Madhyamaheshwar is located in the district of Rudraprayag and is steeped in mythology and folklore. According to legend, after the epic Mahabharat war, the Pandavas wanted to pay reverence to Lord Shiva in order to absolve them from their sin. On sighting the approaching Pandavas, Lord Shiva turned into a bull in order to illude them. But Bhima, one of the five Pandava brothers, recognised the Lord and pursued him relentlessly. Lord Shiva divided his body into five parts to escape Bhima. The sites where the five parts of the Lord appeared are revered as the Panch Kedar. The middle-torso of the Lord is said to have appeared in Madhyamaheshwar ('madhya' in Hindi means middle). To reach the temple, visitors and pilgrims embark on a tedious 24-km-long trek. This arduous hike, however, is worth the effort as visitors are treated to uninterrupted views of green land and surrounding mountains. The temple stands opposite the Chaukhamba, Neelkanth and Kedarnath mountain peaks.

Shri Madhyamaheshwar or Madmaheshwar trek (2nd Panch Kedar in Uttarakhand) begins from Ransi which is a small village near Ukhimath. Madhyamaheshwar is located at a height of 11500 feet. Madmaheshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva's navel or middle part appeared here and for that reason this place was called Madhyamaheshwar.
Madhyamaheshwar is not easily accessible by road. To reach Madmaheshwar first you have to reach Ukhimath. And from Ukhimath you have to go to Ransi. The trekking route begins from Ransi Village. From Ransi, the trek takes you through beautiful forests & rivers which gives you divine spiritual feeling. The total distance of Madmaheshwar trek from Ransi is 16 kms one side. First 6 kilometers the trek goes downhill but for next 10kms the trek is challenging. After Ransi your next stop is Gaundar which is a small village on the bank of Madhuganga river. After Gaundar you reach Bantoli which is one kilometer from Gaundar. Bantoli has 2 parts namely Lower & Upper Bantoli.
There are limited home stays options on the trekking route. You can stay in Gaundar and Bantoli. There are many small homestays at these places. At Madhyamaheshwar, you can stay in simple guesthouses near Temple. The best time to to trek Madhyamaheshwar trek is from May to June and September to October. During the winter, the place receives heavy snowfall & trek becomes impossible.
Rishikesh to Ransi Village Ukhimath || Madmaheshwar Trek 2024
To reach Madhyamaheshwar from Rishikesh, you can take a bus or train to Ukhimath and then trek to Ransi and Madhyamaheshwar:
1. Rishikesh to Ukhimath
You can take a bus from Rishikesh to Ukhimath, which is about 179 kilometers and takes about 5.3 hours. You can also take a train, which takes about 7 hours and costs between Rs. 200–1500. If you want to take a taxi, you can hire one from Dehradun, which usually costs more than Rs. 3500.
2. Ukhimath to Ransi
From Ukhimath, you can take a taxi to Ransi, which is about 20 kilometers away. You can also take a bus or jeep to Rudraprayag, Gopeshwar, or Ukhimath, and then take a jeep to Ransi from Ukhimath.
3. Ransi to Madhyamaheshwar
From Ransi, you can start the 18-kilometer trek to Madhyamaheshwar, which takes about 3 hours and 289 meters. The trek offers views of the mountains and green land, and the temple is located across from the Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, and Kedarnath peaks
