This video walks you through creating a shader node network in Blender that you can use to paint different textures on different parts of your models. It uses masks to layer shaders one on top of another and which can be quickly adjusted by using Blender's texture painting tools. Not only does this approach let you combine the color maps, but also lets you mix normal, roughness and even displacement of several different shaders into your material.
