A video golf lesson on the problems caused by a poor swing plane.

In this video on the golf swing, we'll briefly discuss the swing plane and the problems a poor swing plane can cause.

The ideal swing plane is a chain reaction where the back remains aligned, the pelvis moves in both directions, and the club returns to similar angles. You need to create the right conditions to allow the club to strike the ball horizontally.

A good player can adapt to create different ball trajectories, but we won't discuss that today because it's really related to the clubface.

However, if you have a slightly unusual swing plane, your divots will tell you. They're all crooked relative to what you're doing, and that will cause problems.

Inside-Outside Swing Plane

If you have an inside-outside swing plane, meaning your club comes back too low—below the plane—the main problem you'll encounter is that it will hit the ground too early. This will result in thin shots when it hits the grass too early and tops when it doesn't hit anything and bounces back up.

Outside-Inside Swing Plane

Conversely, if your club swings in the opposite direction, which we'll call outside-in, this can lead to excessively vertical contact and therefore weak shots.

Correcting a Poor Swing Plane

If you notice this type of trajectory, try filming yourself or watching yourself in a mirror, because there's nothing like a mirror and two clubs (as in the video above) to see if the club is coming back correctly or at an angle. And then, try to return to something more logical.

Self-analysis is the best thing: look at yourself, observe your divots, observe your trajectories, note the mistakes you make...

And then always try to return to the center line. The more you work to return to the center line, and not try to correct a flaw, the more you will progress. Don't try to do the opposite; focus on returning to the center line, returning to the neutral point that will be your most efficient point.

Have fun, repeat the exercise on the swing plane with the string to check your ability, focus on your center line, and you will progress very quickly.
