In early 1944, the Red Army advanced towards Narva, after clearing the approaches to Leningrad. The Soviets attepmted to capture the city for several months, as the Germans were well dug in, and finally succeeded in July. The Germans fell back to the Tannenberg Line, were they held up for a few more weeks, before retreating towards Germany, as they were in danger of being cut off in the South. For capturing Narva and the Baltic countries, the Soviets paid a heavy price - 500,000 casualties.
