The Backrooms are an urban legend and creepypasta that tells the story of an endless maze of randomly generated offices. It is characterized by "the smell of wet carpet, a monochromatic yellow color and buzzing fluorescent lights where, according to witnesses, there are more than 999 levels with different characteristics." Although Google users have expanded on this concept by creating different "levels" and "entities" of The Backrooms, the original version came from a two-paragraph 4chan comment on a post calling for "haunting images," where an anonymous user made up a story based on one of the photos. The Backrooms would draw comparisons to other horror trends and works, including liminal space photography, SCP Foundation collaborations, and the six-hour album series Everywhere at the End of Time.
Since its original creation, The Backrooms has expanded into various other forms of media and Internet culture, including video games and YouTube videos.
