Typical mule deer bucks Colorado Springs
This is not an unusual sight in Colorado Springs; mature mule deer bucks browsing and showing no fear of humans. These two are still in velvet so the antlers still have a month or so of growing left. Antlers can grow an inch a day. These are fine specimens.
Development does not seem to affect the deer habitat negatively. The fear of humans seems to be gone (not good) and that one buck does not look all too friendly and can slash a human with his hooves in a nanosecond. It is only natural for animals to reside where they are not hunted and food is plenty. Hunting is necessary to control populations and fees from licenses pay for wildlife management which taxpayers would be loathe to do. Enjoy looking at wildlife and thank a hunter as they the ones who pay to make it possible.
Less common but seen at night are black bear, coyotes and the secretive mountain lion. They all come to feed and it is illegal in the state of Colorado to feed wildlife.
Bucks like these are to be avoided in November and December. They are interested in does then and all caution is it out the window. Deer do attack humans with antlers but if they have no fear of you and are agitated they can strike you quickly with their hooves. You will wish you never gave them donuts in the summer when a hoof opens you up later on.
