They are the conventional way to edit your footer, sidebars, and similar areas on #WordPressWebsites. Your theme determines where and how they are used. Certain plugins can also add widget functionality.
In this video, we talk about how to add widgets to widget areas, how to add additional widget options, and how themes dictate how widgets are used.
In WordPress simply...
1. Navigate to Appearance ➡ Widgets
2. Drag Widgets From the Left into Areas on the Right
3. Configure Widgets as Desired. Be Sure to Save.
4. Adjust Widget Area Display via the Customizer and/or Theme Options
Again, your theme determines a lot. Many themes, like #Divi, have great built in options. Others only offer the bare minimum. Whatever the case, you may need a custom widget or bit of extra code to achieve that desired effect.
You should always try to avoid bloating your WordPress install with extra plugins. However, many plugins add widget functionality without too much extra code. After all, widgets are a longstanding WordPress building block.
