Persona 5 Strikers is a very interesting game to look at. On one hand, it’s a spinoff, and if you’re familiar with the Persona series at all, you’ll know that Persona spinoffs… they have a reserved spot in hell. But on the other hand, it was handled with so much love and respect for the main series that it’s essentially the closest we’ll ever get to a Persona 5 2.
You see, Persona spin-offs have a really bad and probably well-deserved reputation. With the hilariously terrible reception of the Persona Dancing series, mainly 3 and 5, as well as PQ, PQ2, P4 Arena, P5 Tactica. I feel it’s safe to say that Atlus has struggled quite a bit when it comes to creating worthwhile spinoffs of their biggest IP. So, what the hell is Strikers then? How did an out-of-house development studio and a subsidiary to Atlus do what supposedly couldn’t be done and create a title that even holds its own against the main series asterisk? That’s a genuine question, by the way.
Strikers manages to defy the Atlus curse that plagues almost every spinoff in the Persona series and can even hold its own against the core titles asterisk. This is a pretty big claim to make; the main series isn’t known for mediocre games, after all. So, today we’re going to take a look at it. We’ll peek at how it differs from its predecessor in a metaphorical lens, touch on how it uses intertextuality to aid in its characterization, reflect on how the drastic shift in music genre is indicative of the gameplay and moreover, it’s entire combat system as a whole, and if any of that sounded scary to you, don’t worry, that’s why the script to this video is 9 pages long.
So, without further ado, my name is River, you’re watching SnesM3ss, and this is Persona 5 Strikers.
