In this way the High Cathedral Church to Cologne is - so the official name - the most visited historical monument of Germany - and one of the most photographed sights of our planet. For many art historians the cathedral is the most "Gothic of the Gothic cathedrals", a construction or building of the superlatives: In 1880 - during its finishing - the cathedral was the highest building of the world.
Also the facade of the cathedral is world record for all building of churches with 7.100 square meters it is almost as large as a footballfield is. Also with regard to its construction and building time the cathedral is very wide in front in the worldwide ranking: 632 years. Only the Chinese Wall needed more time - incredible two and a halfthousand years.
However is it only its monumentally that with the visitors a common "not to be able to understand it" produces? Or is it still more the magic - that it turns the people to believe to enter another world?

Damit ist die Hohe Domkirche zu Köln - so der offizielle Name - das bestbesuchte historische Monument Deutschlands - und eine der am meisten fotografierten Sehenswürdigkeiten unseres Planeten. Für viele Kunsthistoriker ist der Dom die "gotischste der gotischen Kathedralen", ein Bauwerk der Superlative: 1880 - bei seiner Fertigstellung - war der Dom das höchste Gebäude der Welt. Weltrekord für alle Kirchenbauwerke ist auch die Fassade des Domes, mit 7.100 Quadratmetern ist sie fast so groß wie ein Fußballfeld. Auch hinsichtlich seiner Bauzeit ist der Dom im weltweiten Ranking ganz weit vorn: 632 Jahre. Einzig für die Chinesische Mauer ließ man sich mehr Zeit - unglaubliche zweieinhalb Jahrtausende.
Doch ist es allein seine Monumentalität die bei den Besuchern eine Art von kollektivem "es nicht fassen können" produziert? Oder ist da noch mehr - ein Zauber, der die Menschen glauben macht, eine andere Welt zu betreten?
