VanTrip - Finding the Adriatic Pearl: Croatia
Today we will explore the pearl of the Adriatic while chasing the bear on the road trip in my van - our #vantrip destination of this week is Croatia. Although I will be mostly traveling through the mainland this time, Croatia has many many islands as well. From over 1200 islands there are only around fifty of them inhabited. The most popular islands include Hvar, Vis, Korčula, and Brač.

INTERESTING RANDOM FACT: Did you know that we all use something that a Croatian Slavoljub Penkala invented? It is a mechanical pencil, called the Penkala in 1906. Today we call it “pen.”
Dubrovnik was a significant independent republic for 450 years and was a major rival of Venice in the Adriatic. The old town of Dubrovnik is famous for its majestic city walls that surround the city and was also the filming location of Kings Landing in Game of Thrones. So, welcome to Westeros!
Today, you can enter the impressive old town through three different medieval gates, the Ploče Gate, Pile Gate, or the Buža Gate. The old town is a pedestrian-only area, full of cobblestone alleyways amongst medieval-style buildings, making it truly feel like you are stepping back in time to wander the streets of a medieval city.

The small fishing harbor is set between Bokar Fortress on the left and Fort Lovrijenac on the right. The familiar scene from Season 2, Episode 6 ‘The Old Gods and the New’, the harbor represents the entrance and beaches of King’s Landing and is where the Lannisters say goodbye to Princess Myrcella. The nearby pier on Dubrovnik West Harbour is Blackwater Bay, the stone dock where Sansa and Shae are watching the ships in Season 3, Episode 1 ‘Valar Dohaeris’ when Littlefinger arrives to talk to Sansa and offers her a way out.
The setting for King’s Landing Harbour is visible from Pile Harbour which is just outside the Old Town Walls of Dubrovnik close to Pile Gate.
The imposing Minceta Tower is the highest point in Dubrovnik. It featured as the House of the Undying in Qarth in Season 2 Episode 10 ‘Valar Morghulis’ when Daenerys Targaryen searches for the entrance in the walls while in pursuit of her stolen dragons.
The Jesuit Staircase doubles as the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing. Cersei’s infamous Walk of Shame in Season 5, Episode 10 ‘Mother’s Mercy’ stretches across four locations in the Old Town but the Jesuit Staircase, that are perhaps the most famous setting from where Cercei must start upon her walk of shame to return home.
