One of the themes I covered in “I Dream He Talks to Me,” and specifically in the essay titled, “The Tender Thread,” is danger. People with autism often don’t recognize boundaries when it comes to encountering what could be hazardous situations. Elopement and water seeking are common threats to the safety of some people who aren’t neuro-typical, and they certainly are for my son, John Henry.
That means parents and caregivers live on high alert. But even our constant hyper vigilance isn’t always enough. Every wise parent I know does the absolute best they can do — but there is a point at which the best we can do is say a prayer and have faith and hope that angels are nearby. They certainly seem to be hovering in our lives, and for that I’m constantly whispering a thank you.
