I've been a night owl all my life, and one of the things I love about winter is that there is more night time for me to enjoy. I tend to write more songs in the winter, when the dark days and early nights bring me inside and make me a little more reflective.
White Noise is about the creative magic that can happen in a quiet house at night.
The lyrics:
All the world’s asleep
Just as I start mining
By the dawn I’ll rest in stillness
In the service of a child
Disguised as one more master
I await the midnight illness
To come and take my hand
The less I say, the more I understand
Step into the white noise washing over me
Descend into the dark
Step into the white hot circle
So I can play a part
So I can play the part
I climb and dive again
Riding out the wave
To tune into that perfect frequency
All at once it met me
And in one fluid motion
The demons all surrender before me
Caught inside a trance
I’m game to learn a new nocturnal dance
Step into the white noise washing over me
Descend into the dark
Step into the white hot circle
So I can play a part
So I can play the part
The meter’s running, if I don’t get it down
It will all blow away. It will all evaporate
With any luck I can reconstruct the crime another time,
Call the witness and present every piece of evidence, ‘
Cause I will never be here again
I will never be here again
I’m coming back, but it will not be the same
I will never be here again
I’m going in
I’ll step into the white noise
I’ll descend into the dark
Step into the white hot circle
And I will play a part,
I will play the part
Yes, I will play the part.
