Have you ever seen a glowing sea?
This mesmerizing phenomenon occurred right here in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. While people used to travel abroad to witness sparkling blue waters, Chennai’s ECR beach has brought this magic close to home. Other places in India, like Betalbatim beach in Goa, have also experienced this enchanting glow.
Known as bioluminescence, this natural effect is caused by tiny sea organisms that emit light when disturbed, often after heavy rains. Like fireflies, some sea creatures glow to find food, protect themselves, or communicate, especially in the deep sea where sunlight doesn’t reach.
However, this blue algae, if it grows in excess, can decrease oxygen levels in the water, posing risks to marine life.
