The story of One Direction begins in 2010, with five boys participating individually in The X Factor in the United Kingdom.
These boys were: Harry Styles, 16; Liam Payne, 17, who had previously auditioned for The X Factor in 2008; Louis Tomlinson, 18; Niall Horan, 16; and Zayn Malik, 17.
All the boys initially appeared as solo artists on the show, but none made it to the final round. Scherzinger, along with Simon Cowell, proposed forming a group with the five of them. Each week, their popularity grew among fans.
There came a point in the show where they had so many fans that when the judges spoke, they couldn't hear each other because they were so loud.
And they won The X Factor? No, they didn't; they finished third.
After the final, Simon Cowell signed the band to his record label, Syco Records, seeing their enormous commercial potential.
And who is Simon Cowell?
Simon Cowell is an influential music producer, television executive, and media personality, known for being one of the toughest judges on The X Factor, American Idol, and Got Talent.
From February 2011 to April 2011, the boys toured with hundreds of other X Factor contestants. A total of 47 dates were played at various major venues in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Shortly after the tour ended, in September 2011: Release of the single "What Makes You Beautiful."
From December 18, 2011, to July 1, 2012 (six months), they embarked on the "Up All Night Tour" to promote the album. Although initially a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland, the album's success led to the tour expanding internationally, including Australia, New Zealand, and North America.
They established themselves as the biggest boy band in the world.
The media began referring to them as the "second British Invasion" in the United States, comparing them to the success of The Beatles.
One of the highlights of 2013 for One Direction was the release of their first concert film, "This Is Us." It was an instant box office success, grossing over $70 million worldwide.
On March 25, 2015, Zayn Malik left the group in the middle of the tour. In his statement, Malik expressed his desire to focus on his personal life and get away from the pressures of fame and band life. (Search on Facebook)
Look at this. I had to make a calendar to organize the information. They were 868 days on tour and 1,322 days off tour. 40% vs. 60%.
But keep in mind that in that 60%, they also had to take photos for magazine covers, merchandise photos, record videos, make albums, release singles, appear on television shows, etc.
But no drama, anyway. Well, there was drama, but we'll talk about it later.
And on August 16, 2015, they announced an indefinite hiatus while they were on tour.
And at the end of their tour, on November 13, 2015, they announced… their fifth album, Made in the A.M.
It's much more understandable when we read part of Zayn's autobiographical book, where his testimony is heartbreaking. He says:
“When I look back at images of myself from that time, I finally realize how sick I was. It's something I'd never spoken about before, because it wasn't until I left the group that I finally accepted that I suffered from a fairly serious eating disorder.”
“I'm not sure what happened, but I imagine the stress of the road, the tour, and the fact that the only thing I had under my control at the time was my own body—being able to do whatever I wanted with it—gave me that much-needed sense of independence. In the end, I ended up very sick after losing so much weight.”
“There were simply times when I wouldn't eat anything for three days because I wasn't hungry. I was so focused on rehearsing and performing that I didn't think about it or how serious it was.”
