March For Equality - SF - March 25th
On the eve of the March 26th US Supreme Court hearing on California's controversial Prop 8, thousands in San Francisco, CA gathered for a march and rally to send a clear message to the nations capital on the right of same sex couples to marry.
Gay marriage is legal in nine states, and protesters at this event want the supreme court to honor the federal judge's decision that struck down Prop 8...and help add California to that list.
"Gay! Straight! Black! White! Marriage is a civil right!"
Thousands gathered at Market & Castro in San Francisco and, after a short rally, marched through the city. More joined along the route to City Hall, including many same sex parents with their children. "I Love My Gay Fathers!" read one sign carried by a young girl, enjoying a birds eye view of the march from her Dad's shoulders.
Traffic was stopped for long stretches along the route as the march of 3000+ spread across several city blocks, but commuters and onlookers didn't seem to mind. Many honks and waves of support, some even getting out of their cars to watch and show support.
"L! G! B! T! We Demand Equality!"
The march landed after sundown at SF City Hall where many spoke, including 12 year old Daniel Martinez-Leffew. Daniel was adopted by a gay couple in Northern California, after being told in foster care that he was 'unadoptable' because of a genetic disorder.
"It is important that all families are protected and valued. In our country we may not all be the same, but we are all Americans and deserve an equal chance at bettering our lives.
I hope you make the right decision in the end."
