In the class I will guide you through my process of using reference images to create a mood board when designing characters.
Designing characters from scratch can be a real challenge. That is, until I put some structure into this early part of the process of character design.
No matter what your skill level, beginner to seasoned professional, this process will apply to any scenario.
Are you a comic artist? Need a character for a video game? Character concept art for a movie or animated feature? Or do you just want to create something for fun like I love to do? This process should work for all of these and more.
My goal is to guide you through my process of those initial stages of Character Design. We’ll use a basic brief so you can adapt it to whatever style you specialise in.
In this class, you will learn to:
Break down the brief into key features
Search for ideas and images based on those features
Gather your images either in Pinterest or compile in any image editor
Narrow your selections down to what you believe represent the core of the character and compile one final composite image that will become your mood board.
Begin some rough sketches using elements in the reference image
End with a rough draft of the one you feel captures the brief
The goal of this class isn’t to teach you how to draw, or end with a refined, finished piece, but to form a clear vision and direction for your character.
