The Many Filipino Enclaves in Alaska
The US of A today has the largest Filipino population in the diaspora today by far at over 4 million Americans of full or partial Filipino ancestry, but outside of Hawaii, one of the most disproportionately large Filipino populations is actually in the coldest state in the Union surprisingly enough. There are now many Filipino enclaves throughout Alaska, such as Juneau and Ketchikan in the Panhandle or Kodiak Island and the Aleutians in Southwest Alaska. Naturally, the largest population in terms of absolute numbers is in Anchorage, where they make up around 5% of the population, although the aforementioned regions have much higher percentages. Some of the oldest Filipino migrant workers to settle in the state were known as Alaskeros and worked a variety of jobs in the cold Arctic wasteland including sailors, whalers, fishermen or gold miners. Many of the Filipinos who arrived would decide to settle there permanently, either marrying among the local communities or bringing their families with them from overseas and this is the basis for the Filipino Alaskan community today, one of the most remarkable and fascinating diasporas in all of the Americas.
