There are two broad categories of bike lane infrastructure: unidirectional and bidirectional. Cities will often have both types. This leads to the inevitable question of how to handle the transition from a bidirectional bike lane on one side of the street to unidirectional bike lanes on opposite sides of the street. Or when a bike lane simply ends, and the cyclist is required to cross the street just to continue straight. This is just one of many examples showing that infrastructure with "surprises" can lead to safety issues for its users.
