Such generators would vastly reduce the ongoing fuel logistics burden. A generator meeting his description was designed, built and tested by the US Army in 1962.
It was called ML-1 (Mobile, Low Power Reactor Number 1.) Vietnam spending prevented ML-2 and follow on development.
