1981 Panamanian Air Force Twin Otter Crash Site - Visited in 2014
From Wikipedia - "The 1981 Panamanian Air Force Twin Otter crash occurred on July 31, 1981, when a de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter of the Panamanian Air Force, with identity code FAP-205, crashed at Marta Hill, in the community of Coclesito, in adverse weather conditions while on its final approach to the airport. All seven people on board, including General Omar Torrijos Herrera, who led the country's military dictatorship between 1969 and 1981, were killed."
I tagged along on a hike with biologists Grace and Tate to do some sightseeing, the long hike up Cerra Marta offered a view of the actual crash site. The hike up was arduous (for me, anyways - was not in shape for this hike!) but quite nice, I got to see a lot of fascinating wildlife and the views were really fantastic. That time of the year and especially along the tops of the hills the wind was fierce.
Sad that so many died there. :( It was eerie to be there.
