In geared actuator applications, output encoders play a crucial role in determining the position of the output shaft after start-up. This is because the motor encoder is not sufficient for this task, as the motor often rotates multiple times for a single output shaft rotation. Therefore, output encoders are needed to accurately track the position of the output shaft.

MD Series controllers can support three types of output encoders:

RLS AksIM-2 encoders can achieve resolutions of up to 20 bits and they support hollow shaft applications meaning you can pass your power cables through the output shaft making the actuator even more compact. Its main downside is the cost.

MAB offaxis encoder is another solution that supports hollow shaft applications at a fraction of the RLS encoder price. Its main downside is that it requires calibration (1 full rotation of the output shaft), and is not as precise as the other two solutions.

MAB axial encoder is a non-hollow shaft solution that can be used for initial position determination. It's very cost effective and features higher resolution than the offaxis encoder.
