Sherpur Sadar Upazila is an upazila in Sherpur District, Bangladesh. It consists of 14 unions and one municipality. It is one of the 5 upazilas of Sherpur District under Mymensingh Division and is located in the southern part of the district. Sherpur Sadar Upazila is bordered by Sribardi Upazila, Jhenaigati Upazila and Nalitabari Upazila to the north, Jamalpur Sadar Upazila of Jamalpur District to the south, Nakla Upazila of Jamalpur District to the east, Islampur Upazila and Melanda Upazila of Jamalpur District to the west. Sherpur Sadar Upazila has an area of 372.89 square kilometers and a population of 4,97,179 as of the 2011 census; the annual population growth rate is 1.46%. The population density is 1,333 people per square kilometer.
Sherpur is an ancient town. In the 4th century AD, this region was under the rule of the Kamrup Kingdom. Kamrup was known as Pragjyotish Desh. The capital of Pragjyotish (Kamrup) was Pragjyotishpur. At that time, Buddhism emerged and spread its influence throughout the region. According to FA Saksi, the author of the Mymensingh District Report, this region was under the Koch feudal lords until the last decade of the fifteenth century. A Koch king named Dalipa Samanta ruled this region. His capital was Gardalipa. Gardalipa or Garjaripa is now part of the Srivardi Thana of Sherpur district. The Koch dynasty kings ruled Gardalipa for many years. The power of the Koch feudal lords was exhausted due to the continuous attacks of the independent sultans of Bengal. In 1491, under the orders of Saifuddin II Firoz Shah, the commander Majlis Khan defeated and killed the Koch king Dalipa Samanta and occupied Gardalipa. From then on, this region came under the control of Muslims. During the reign of Emperor Jahangir (1605-1617), the entire Mymensingh region came under the Mughal empire. Sherpur is an ancient town. Earlier, its name was Dashkahaniya. In ancient times, the Brahmaputra River was very wide. To cross the river from Jamalpur to Sherpur, one had to pay a ferry fare of ten kahankari. From this, this place came to be known as "Dashkahania". It is said about the naming of Sherpur, that during the Nawabi period of Bengal, the last landowner of the Ghazi dynasty, Sher Ali Ghazi, occupied the Dashkahania region and ruled independently. Dashkahania was named Sherpur after this Sher Ali Ghazi. Sherpur Sadar Upazila currently has 1 municipality and 14 unions. The entire administrative activities of the upazila are under the jurisdiction of Sherpur Sadar Thana.

Sherpur Municipality was established in 1869. During the Great War of Independence, the Pakistani army entered Sherpur on 26 April. Sherpur was liberated from the invaders on 7 December. Sherpur Subdistrict was declared in 1979 and Sherpur District on 22 February 1984. Sherpur Sadar Upazila was established on 1 February 1984.

Sherpur Sadar (Bengali: শের্পুর সদার) is an upazila of Sherpur District in the Division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Sherpur Sadar Thana was turned into an upazila in 1984. Sherpur Sadar Upazila is divided into Sherpur Municipality and 14 union parishads: Bajitkhila, Balairchar, Betmari Ghughurakandi, Chormochoriya, Chorpokhimari, Chorsherpur, Dhola, Gajirkhamar, Kamarar Chor, Kamariya, Losmonpur, Pakuriya, Rouha, and Vatshala. The union parishads are subdivided into 100 mauzas and 188 villages. Sherpur Municipality is subdivided into 9 wards and 46 mahallas. There are 11 colleges in the upazila: Sherpur Government College., [8] Sherpur Government Mohila College, Beer Muktijodda Atiur Rahman Model College, Dr. Sekander Ali College, Jamsad Ali Memorial College, Kamarar Char College, Model Girls College, Sherpur, Nizam Uddin Ahmed Model College, Sanuwer Hosen Model College, Shahid Abdur Rashid Commerce College and Sherpur Biggan College. Other schools include Ideal Preparatory and High School (1991), Govt victoria academy, Govt girls high school, and Nobarun public school.
According to Banglapedia, Sherpur Government Victoria Academy (1887), GK Pilot High School, founded in 1919, Sapmari High School (1907), and Sherpur High School (1920) are notable secondary schools.[5] Sherpur is the birthplace of numerous highly educated doctors and engineers, also people of different occupations.
