As part of my series on how to animate using free/open-source (or cheap & ownable) software, a movie on which open source operating system I recommend (TLDR it's Linux Mint MATE). I cannot believe how easy it was to get set up - and I'm using it regularly on my ancient DELL INSPIRON 1720, a machine made in 2007! I'm keeping my eye open for a second hand Lenovo Thinkpad, 430 or 440 era, something with a little more juice than the Dell, but I'm still impressed that this thing works.
So in addition to using Krita (Free) on my main machine (win10), I'm happily using it on an ancient laptop, along with Audacity, OpenToonz, and a grudging install of blender!
I'll be posting more animation tutorials here on Krita, with future ones using OpenToonz for comparison, as well as any other programs that can help to wean us off the overpriced, buggy bloatware from the usual suspects.

LINUX MINT INSTALLATION (download the .iso file here):

RUFUS (create bootable USB LINUX installer, as long as you have an 8gig or larger USB stick, RUFUS will wipe it and place the iso on the key, allowing you to boot from the USB stick - or, once it works, install it to your HD)

To install software on a LINUX mint machine, you can download them directly from their own website, but it's far better to install them using the software manager in LINUX, as that's been tested to a much higher degree.
WARNING: if you do this, be sure you're OK with the risk of data loss! If you have anything of value on the PC, be sure to back it up first.
