Kristallnacht - a precursor to the Holocaust
On November 9-10, 1938, German Nazis staged the country's first mass pogrom against Jews. The response from leading Western countries was extremely weak. Of course! After all, they themselves had recently "written a pardon" for the Hitler regime in Munich for Berlin's invasion of Europe, the attack on the USSR, and the outbreak of World War II. The formal pretext for the pogrom was the murder of the third secretary of the German embassy in Paris by the Jewish émigré Herschl Hermann Faibel Grynszpan, who was avenging the deportation of his relatives—Jews of Polish descent living in Germany—to Poland, ordered by Adolf Hitler.
It is believed that the NSDAP's top brass themselves were preparing a similar provocation abroad, intended to serve as a pretext for radical repression against German Jews. The infamous Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich, head of the Reich Security Office, the key apparatus of the German secret services and political police, was appointed responsible for the provocation. The death of Ernst Eduard vom Rath, who was wounded during the assassination attempt, was the result of an "accidental" transfusion of the wrong blood type, administered by a doctor specially sent from Berlin.
