My Mom and Dad, Nola Joan Saffer-Jennings, and Louis Jennings, loved all holidays and occasions that called for decorations, and where family and friends would gather. But my Mom especially loved Christmas (with Mardi Gras and Halloween tied for second place). The little Christmas tree also serves as a ๐Ÿ–• to all those rabid fundamentalist puritanicals who disapprove of Christmas: May you be blessed with the Joy of Christmas all the days of your lives โ€” whether you want it or not, whether you like it or not, or whether you approve of it or not. Christmas is probably the only thing Christianity got right โ€• and that took almost 2,000 years.

In honor of my Mother's memory and legacy, I urge everyone who has had chicken pox (and everyone gets chicken pox) to be vaccinated for shingles. After my Mom contracted shingles, vaccines were developed. Vaccines are to prevent disease, not cure it. The shingles rash and pain usually clears up for most people, but not my Mom: she suffered excruciating nerve damage pain of Post Herpetic Neuralgia for the rest of her life.

Also laid to rest there: The Mother of my Mother, Mary "Mamie" Catherine Murphy. Her Brother, John Murphy, and her Sister, Annie Margaret Kinberger. My brother, Louis Simon, is memorialized on the headstone, but his ashes were scattered off the beach of Ship Island, Mississippi along with his Golden Retriever, Jake. He wanted to be scattered off the coast of Belize, but a massive hurricane plus HIV-AIDS hypochondria and paranoia in the mid-1990s meant permission was denied. In the end, it's still the same body of water: the Gulf of Mexico.

This burial plot has been in the Murphy family a long time, I would guess since at least The Great Depression. Maybe even my grandmother's parents (of whom she only talked once, about the "Spanish" flu pandemic at the end of World War I) are buried there. My Grandma and her sister Annie rented to boarders (not tenants with their own apartments). Sometimes, these poor folks would get sick and die, and they didn't have family or funds for a proper burial. As they did in life, my Grandmother and Grand Aunt would take them in and lay them to rest in their burial plot in the Sanctified Ground of Saint Patrick Cemetery โ„– 2 โ€” but their names were not recorded on the headstone. I don't know exactly who or how many are buried there, but it is long-accepted New Orleans practice to "disturb" a grave in order to lay another to rest.

I don't want any grave "disturbed" for me. The damp ground of New Orleans does not preserve mortal remains or their caskets: it is truly "ashes to ashes, dust to dust." Or "mud to mud' in the case of coastal Louisiana. Nevertheless, I hope I am cremated and my ashes scattered. The Pacific Northwest is beautiful, Cape Perpetua especially so. For me, New Orleans is a giant black cauldron boiling over with bad memories and bad karma. There's something about New Orleans that either brings out the worst in people, or prevents them from achieving their best. I owe my life of low-paid drudgery (a Murphy-Jennings tradition that goes back centuries, maybe even millennia) and chronic depression to New Orleans and its Public Schools (F.T. Howard โ„– 1 Elementary, ๐Ÿ‘น S. J. Peters Middle School ๐Ÿ˜ˆ, Warren Easton Fundamental Senior High/NOCCA (6048 Perrier Street) class of 1979). My Mom was a bit upset that I did not want to be interred in the Murphy-Jennings plot, but I pointed out that we will all end up buried at sea.

Need a videographer in the New Orleans area, but not a cinematic production studio and crew? I'm one guy, with one professional video camera, and one computer. Where they charge thou$and$, I charge much less.
