The Scopes Evolution Trial of 1925: What Really Happened
The Scopes trial was a carefully planned public relations stunt that got out of hand. Business boosters in Dayton, Tennessee wanted publicity. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) wanted to lose a test case that would go to the Supreme Court and be overturned. Jointly, they staged a trial. The ACLU persuaded a new high school football coach and one-day substitute biology teacher to claim that he had taught Darwinian evolution. But he wasn't sure that he had.
The trial was the first to be broadcast on national radio. It became a media circus.
