Our houseplants aren't always at the top of our minds - Fall can be a busy time... but don't forget to pay a little extra attention when it's time to turn your furnace back on! Fall is a time of shifting: The daylight hours decrease and many plants' needs may change!
Often you will see your houseplants turning yellow or brown and dropping leaves during this seasonal transition from Summer to Fall. Don't panic! This is normal. When Fall hits, I recommend the following:
*keep your plants away from your furnace vents or close off the furnace vents that are near your houseplants. ESPECIALLY if you live in an already dry climate ( like me!)
adjust your watering schedule. Generally speaking, I always recommend backing off on watering. It may take some time to find that sweet spot of keeping individual plants happy throughout the Fall and winter months. Don't ever hesitate to stick your finger in the soil and see how dry the container really is. If it's dry an inch deep, you are safe to water. Overwatering during the Fall and Winter months can welcome unwanted fungal diseases.
Consider relocating certain houseplants if you think they may not be getting enough natural light. What was working mid August might not be good enough mid November. Play around with your house's light exposure. If you have very minimal natural light to begin with, consider buying artificial lights to get your sun-loving houseplants through the Winter.

Please leave any other comments or questions below. I'm being very general. Of course, each plant is different and has it's very own unique needs. That's what's so endlessly exciting about the plant world! You are ALWAYS learning.

Love,
