How can incoming freshman athletes be ready to compete in the transfer portal world?
In 2021, NCAA rules changed to allow student-athletes the transfer without having to sit out for a year.
In 2024, the NCAA passed legislation allowing for unlimited transfers for student-athletes without penalty.
It’s fair to say that the college sports landscape has inextricably changed. These changes are affecting not only student-athletes, but coaches and administrators (especially compliance teams).
Incoming freshmen are being asked to compete with four, five, and even six-year student-athletes for roster spots and playing time. The need to be physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared for the transition to collegiate athletics is now greater than ever.
Perhaps, the best way to avoid struggles in year one and even year two, as well as avoiding transferring in the future is to be as prepared as possible BEFORE arriving on campus.
Identifying and leveraging the resources available to you as far in advance of arriving on campus will be critical to making the transition to college athletics as seamless as possible.
