High publicity could force out-of-county jury search in Murdaugh murder retrial, solicitor says
Jury selection is emerging as a major hurdle as Alex Murdaugh's overturned murder conviction heads to a retrial, with prosecutors warning that extensive publicity could make it difficult to find an unbiased panel.
15th Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson said the amount of coverage and public attention surrounding the case has already exposed many potential jurors to evidence and arguments from both sides.
Richardson said the publicity could lead to jurors being brought in from another county, or the trial being moved altogether. He said one option could be selecting jurors in a different area and then either holding the trial there or transporting those jurors back to Colleton County.
