Global Ecosystems Atlas - Group on Earth Observations (GEO)
The Global Ecosystems Atlas project is an international collaboration led by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) to create an urgently needed common reference to facilitate harmonized and coherent national, regional and global stock-taking and reporting on ecosystems.
Effective ecosystems monitoring is more urgent than ever because the biodiversity crisis presents a serious threat to economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life.
In recognition of the severity of the biodiversity crisis and the urgent need for action to bend the curve of biodiversity loss and the decline of ecosystems services, in December 2022 more than 190 governments adopted the landmark Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), signalling unprecedented political will and commitment to halt towards nature.
To deliver on its mission of halting and reversing biodiversity loss and the decline of ecosystems services, the GBF contains 4 specific goals and 23 targets, which require effective monitoring, stocktaking and reporting.
