Hi! In this tutorial, you will see how to reduce your audio file size without compromising too much on quality.
In a previous tutorial, you saw how to record sound playing on computer. We used a software called Sound Recorder. Some of the comments told that the file size was
big. So, now we will see how to reduce sound file size using Audacity.
This is a free software. I have a pre-recorded audio file of size 21.2 MB. This was recorded using sound recorder. The file size is quite big for our phones and other
portable devices.
Open Audacity. Click File. Import the audio file that you want to make the size smaller. I usually leave the Make a Copy option to have a backup of the audio. Let's
play the audio.
Before editing the audio, click the sqauare button and gray it out. This would stop the audio.
Click Preferences and then Quality. Here you can see the Default sample rate for Audacity recordings. Here you can see the sample rate of your audio.
Our audio is 44 something. You can change it to 11, 22 or 32. Multiples of 11. Change the default sample format to 16.
You can see the project sample rate has changed. Let's see what happens to the audio. There is not much change in quality of audio.
You have to click the square button and gray it out to edit the audio. If the audio quality is bad, go ahead and try the 22 or 32 sampling rates. Click Export.
Give the converted file a name. You can also save the audio as wave format. I am going to leave mp3. Leave the Edit Metadata as is. Click ok.
Let's see the converted audio's size. It has gone down from 21.2 MB to 495 KB. Let's compare the quality of the audio. Quality is also okay.
