What is Fast GI Approximation and how does it work? We explore all the settings and how this feature can save you time, what it looks like in a render and how to get the most from it.

Fast GI is a feature of Blender's Cycles rendering engine and is used to reduce render time.

The settings for Fast GI live in the light paths tab of the render properties panel in Blender and can be used to reduce the time it takes to render a scene.

The main time savings come from reducing the number of light paths interactions that are ray traced by approximating how light interacts with objects. Physically simulating light interactions is very expensive and so approximating them is one way to optimize rendering, though it can reduce the accuracy, the visual effects are usually more than acceptable.
