Stockings and mittens, hats and caftans—each of these finds from the personal belongings of the Archangel Raphael crew is a great success for the team at the Russian Geographical Society's Center for Historical and Cultural Heritage. Unearthing them in the mud is truly a challenging task.

As a rule, divers at depth don't even realize they're lifting from a Lübeck ship. Once they reach the surface, after thorough washing, they can be seen as interesting artifacts that tell us about the lives of sailors in the early 18th century.

Textiles require careful handling from the moment they're recovered and throughout the restoration process. Roman Prokhorov, underwater archaeologist and restorer at the Russian Geographical Society's Center for Historical and Cultural Heritage, shared how fascinating this task is.

We remind you that the most popular exhibits discovered on the Archangel Raphael will be on display this October at the St. Petersburg History Museum (Peter and Paul Fortress). The exhibition "Dive into the Age of Peter the Great" will feature items from the first third of the 18th century. Gazprom is the general partner of the Underwater Research Center of the Russian Geographical Society's project.
