We continue to uncover new pages in the story of the sinking of the motor vessel Armenia. The survey of the sunken vessel is now complete. Three expeditions have enabled us not only to positively identify it but also to reconstruct the tragic chain of events that led to one of the greatest tragedies in the history of navigation. Sergey Fokin, Executive Director of the Russian Geographical Society's Center for Historical and Cultural Studies, provides a detailed account of the survey's findings. The underwater work is complete. Surface work is only just gaining momentum.
For a year now, we have been working closely with archives, researchers, and relatives of passengers on the Armenia's final voyage. With each name that comes to light, each story about those who found themselves on board, the tragedy takes on ever more tangible dimensions. All of this is now available in the People's List, which will be updated on the project portal.
We begin our story with the crew and medical staff of the motor vessel. There are more than 250 names, each of which has been confirmed through archival research or letters from relatives. Our specialists are currently verifying nearly 300 more names. These include assigned medical personnel, evacuated wounded, and civilians.
Passenger lists—if they existed—have still not been found, making it impossible to accurately calculate the number of victims. But we believe that with your help, we will be able to gather as much information as possible about this tragedy.
If you would like to participate in the "Ship Armenia: Remembering Everyone" project, repost and tell your friends that we are searching for stories and information about the sinking of the medical transport ship on November 7, 1941. Share with us on the portal teplohodarmenia.ru, and together we can restore the memory of the tragedy that occurred almost 80 years ago.
