With this lecture on moral development in children, Siegfried Zimmer ventures into the field of developmental psychology. For contemporary religious education, developmental psychology is an important neighboring discipline. However, Zimmer's presentation is not intended to be a summary of the latest developments in developmental psychology—after all, he is a theologian, not a developmental psychologist. Rather, he uses Lawrence Kohlberg's stage theory of moral development, a Harvard professor of moral development and a classic figure in his field, to describe the steps people take on the path to becoming mature individuals. This illustrates how instructive and fascinating the findings of developmental psychology are, particularly for working with children and young people within a Christian context. It also highlights the importance of treating and supporting children—and adults—according to the stage they are currently at.
