Science Fiction Summer School: Ammonite Livestream
Our first Livestream for this year's Science Fiction Summer School, on June 27th, 2013. We're discussing Ammonite by Nicola Griffith. We were still getting the hang of Livestream, so the first few minutes of our talk were cut off by a mishap, but nothing of value was lost discussion-wise. Hopefully it turned out okay, even if we were a little nervous.
The questions we discussed:
1. How does the use of only female pronouns change the way you read Ammonite?
2. How does the "superpower" that each person seems to acquire change them? Does it matter that their superhuman abilities seem to be feminine in nature?
3. What is "humanity"? Are the people on Jeep still "human"? What human characteristics do they have/not have?
4. Is this book directed towards an expressly female readership? Any male readers? Any genderqueer readers out there checked this book out?
5. How does the biology in the novel make you feel?
We'd love to hear responses and thoughts on these questions still!
