A gap between two vocal cords even during full adduction results in hoarseness of voice. This condition is known as the Phonatory Gap or Vocal gap. This often results from aging when the vocal cord loses some tension and bulk. The treatment is voice therapy to build vocal cord tone and sometimes if it fails, injection of fillers like autologous fat in the vocal fold. In cases, where all treatment fails and the vocal gap is too much, then even Thyroplasty can be done through an external approach.
