In 1927, the creator of the experiment, Thomas Parnell, decided to demonstrate to his students the viscosity of the resin. To do this, he chose the residue of the distillation of tar or petroleum tar - peck - a black solid mass that easily breaks with a hammer blow.
Although the resin appears solid at room temperature, it is in fact a highly viscous liquid.
