There are over 50 armour items in Valheim, each with their own strengths and weaknesses but having so many options can make it difficult to know which items you should use.

So, here are two useful tips to help you get the most out of your armour.

Firstly, if you're struggling with a certain enemy, consider using armour which gives you a resistance to that enemy's damage type. For example, if deathsquitos are constantly giving you a headache, you can use a root harnesk to provide 50% resistance to their attacks.

Generally, when it comes to damage reduction, it is better to choose a resistance bonus effect over a higher armour value - simply due to how the game calculates incoming damage.

Of course, resistance bonus effects will only apply to a specific damage type so if you expect to encounter a variety of enemies dealing different types of damage, it may still be better to take a higher armour value overall.

Secondly, don’t be afraid to mix and match items from different armour sets. Despite there currently being 14 armour sets, there are only four which give you a passive bonus for wearing every item of the set.

These are:
the troll set which increases your sneak level by 15
the root set which increases your bow level by 15
the fenris set which increases your fists skill by 15 and provides a 50% resistance to fire, and
the ask set which reduces your stamina from running and jumping by 10%, reduces your stamina from attacking by 20%, and increases your pierce damage by 10%.

So, unless you are looking to benefit from these very specific set bonuses, prioritise items that provide individual bonus effects, increase overall armor value, and possibly even counteract negative effects from other items.
