Snow mold is a problem for many orchid growers. It is caused by a fungus (Ptychogaster sp.) that spreads through potting media to eventually cover the roots of your orchid. Once it covers the roots, the water-repellent fungus prevents moisture from reaching them. The first indication of snow mold is usually a white powdery growth on the potting media. As the infection progresses, it permeates the potting soil and may grow out of the holes in the bottom of the pot. Snow mold does not feed on the plant. It survives on dead or decaying material in the potting media. As it prevents water and air from reaching your orchid’s roots, you may notice poor growth which can lead to plant death. In severe cases, the fungus may cover the base of the plant for several inches.
