Valve timing is the regulation of the points in the cycle at which the valves are set to open and close.
If the ideal cycle is considered where the inlet and exhaust valves open and close at dead centers, the diagram so plotted for valve timing is known as ideal valve timing diagram.
In the actual cycle, an inlet and exhaust valve does not open and close at dead centers.
There are two factors on because of which actual valve timing is different from ideal one i.e. the Mechanical Factor and the Dynamic Factor.
