Recent research has shown that matrix diffusion (MD) can greatly increase the cleanup time (T) at some sites. However, most site managers are not sure if MD will be a major issue at MY SITE. Will MD increase the cleanup time by 10 years? 50 years? 500 years? This webinar will provide a general overview of prior work on MD, important parameters controlling the importance of MD on cleanup time, and present simple equations for estimating the time to reach 1, 2, and 3 Orders-on-Magnitude (OoM) reductions in contaminant concentrations at downgradient wells.
Presenter: Dr. Robert (Bob) Borden, P.E. serves as Principal Engineer with EOS Remediation, LLC and Emeritus Professor at North Carolina State University. His work is focused on the transport, fate and treatment of pollutants in the subsurface including laboratory studies, fieldwork and mathematical model development. Bob has developed technologies for addition of electron acceptors and donors, co-substrates and pH buffers to stimulate in-situ biodegradation of explosives, perchlorate, hydrocarbons, ethers, and chlorinated solvents.
