Take a closer look at HS2’s Green Corridor’s largest habitat creation project, turning a current construction site into a thriving chalk grassland habitat of international importance in the Chiltern Hills 🏞️.
Chalk grassland 🪨🌿 is a calcareous habitat found across south-east England and the Isle of Wight. This 90-hectare initiative seeds chalk grassland into re-profiled soils, using nutrient-poor subsoils and chalk from tunnelling, combined with recycled concrete and aggregates from construction works ♻️.
The project sits alongside new woodlands🌳, wood pasture 🐑, and wetlands 💧, including almost 65,000 trees and shrubs across 32 species and nearly 3.5 km (nearly 2 miles) of hedgerows on the western slopes of the River Colne.
The result is enhanced biodiversity, improved habitat connectivity, and a clear demonstration of how large-scale infrastructure can regenerate landscape and support nature.
