In the northeast of Australia there is a real tropical paradise - the state of Queensland. Sun, coral sea and gorgeous beaches. It would seem that you can rest, sunbathe and swim as much as you like. However, since the 19th century, these places have frightened people with a series of mysterious and almost instantaneous deaths in the water, for which there was no explanation ...

The Australian aborigines of the Irukandji tribe assured that the cause of death was a demon, it was he who inflicted great pain on people. Indeed, the survivors who managed to survive said that while in the water, they felt a sharp pain, their pulse quickened, and they could not breathe. This state led to the fact that a person could not get out of the water on his own. And those who survived for several days then suffered from painful convulsions and vomiting. Also, doctors found traces of burns on the bodies of the victims.
Scientists could not understand what was happening in the sea waters. Not a single living creature that lived in this area had such a strong poison. The killer, nicknamed the "sea wasp", was never found. And people continued to die ...

Only in 1955 were they able to discover the cause of the death of many people. And the tragic incident helped. A little boy was playing in shallow water when he suddenly fell down dead. Biologist Hugo Flecker, who was near the scene of the tragedy, was deeply impressed by what had happened and decided to urgently take action: the scene of the tragedy was cordoned off and absolutely all organisms in the water were studied in detail.
Then the biologist realized that before him was the cause of all misfortunes - the box jellyfish. It is customary to call them "box jellyfish" because they look like a cube, and at the corners they have bundles of tentacles hanging down. This jellyfish differs from its relatives by its extraordinary transparency. When it is in the water, it becomes almost invisible.
Chironex from the Greek "hand of death", this is the name given to this type of jellyfish. This miniature creature has four long thin tentacles, which are completely covered with stinging cells (nematocytes) containing the most powerful poison on planet Earth. One medium-sized jellyfish can take the life of sixty people in 3 minutes. Even a light touch can be fatal. The venom of the jellyfish is 100 times more toxic than that of the cobra.

Fortunately, these jellyfish are not widespread. However, the beaches of Northern Australia, New Guinea and the Philippine Islands are at risk due to the invasion of jellyfish from November to April. In Australia, jellyfish are estimated to cause at least one death a year and dozens of survivors.
